Super C Alternator Wiring Problems

When I went to replace the Delco Remy Alternator a wire broke off. After I unwrapped the electrical tape that someone had put on it, there is what I believe to be a Diode under the tape. Is this a Diode and does it need to be there? If it does need to be there, the wire that is coming out of it is short, can I solder it back on or will that be to much heat? Should I replace it with a new one with longer leads and where can I find one? I will try to upload a photo

Yes - that's a diode, and yes - it needs to be there.

The remaining lead looks too short to resolder. However a replacement is cheap and readily available (Radio Shack #276-1141, package of 2 is $1.99).

Be sure to wire the diode so the banded end is toward the alternator plug.

Thank you Bob M. I will go to Radio Shack and a get one. I plan to solder it back from where it plugs into the alternator about 12 inches and then use shrink tubing over it to prevent it from breaking off again.

do your self a favor. take a piece of zip tie. cut it and then use that as a stiffener or strain release. .. slip that in the heat shrink with the diode and shrink it. the zip tie piece will stiffen the area and relieve the stres on the diode legs.

You can get a new alternator plug with long leads off the rack at any auto parts store. Either look in the section where all the "HELP!" parts are, or the electrical section.

Went to Radio Shack and they are closed on Wednesday. I will again on Thursday. Thanks again two everyone, I well get a new plug-in and try the zip-tie thing.
