IH 684 Hydraulic Fluid Change Parking Band

After all the advice from you guys, I'm going for the fluid & filter change. Question is, the park brake is U/S, is it worth going the whole hog and changing the band while the oil is drained or does it not need the oil drained to change the band, meaning I can get the oil change done and worry about the band later. If doing it all together, do I need to prepare with any other gaskets etc that should be changed at the same time? Also any tips on the band change would be great, I'm in heavy engineering so not a complete dumpling but I admit tractor maintenance is new to me. Any tips, links or photo's/PDF's that might help would be awesome. I'll try to get a manual before I start but may have a crack at it without.

Hi Stuart,
Re park brake band change, does your 684 have a cab?
Many years ago I was at IH Dealer to pickup parts and mechanic was cleaning up the hydraulic system on a 574 and replacing the parking brake band. It was an open station 574 and the mechanic had the fenders with fuel tank off, seat and platform plus the 3pt hitch cover removed. So if your 684 has a cab I am not sure if cab has to be removed or not.

Yes Jim, it has a cab. Do you think the oil needs to be drained to change the band? If not, I can press on with the oil change and worry about the band later, at the end of the day, I can live without the park brake, a bit inconvenient switching off and leaving in gear to open gates and the like, but I could always 'craft' a clip to hold the footbrake down or something, thing is the oil and filter are desperate, the park brake aint.

Hi stuart!!

The hydraulic top cover does not need the cab to be removed to do the handbrake band, and in theory the oil can be left in, but!! As the crap from the band is probably blocking the suction strainer for the transfer pump, re the intermittent hyds you commented on earlier?? You need to give it a good clean out. To do this you need the pto side cover and MCV off!!

Fair point, I guess I'll have to go for it..Think I'll get my son to give me a hand, I'll have someone to swear at then..Not looking forward to it but what the hell.. Thanks all.

Hi Stuart,

My brother asked his IH mechanic about replacing the parking brake band on his 684, the mechanic's reply was that the drum was probably damaged and would have to be replaced as well.

He suggested that my brother purchase an eye bolt, drill a hole in foot rest so the eye of the bolt comes up between the two brake pedals. He carries a pin with him and when wants to lock the brakes, he depresses the brakes and puts the pin through the eye bolt. Of course this only works if the brakes are not leaking and probably against the rules as parking brakes must be mechanical only.
I am NOT endorsing this alternate parking brake setup but it does work.

If the 3 teflon rings don't come with the gasket you will need to replace them. If the tank is off I think you can lift and pull the lid out the back with the cab on. You will want a hoist or 2 good guys to lift it.

Thanks Jim, I considered a similar method & if the drum is U/S I will probably go for this idea, thing is I still need to strip down to clean out rather than just changing the oil & filter due to the intermitant hyds problems so will have a look at the drum while I'm in there, unless of course, when I drain the oil and it's clean with no cruddy bits in, I might be tempted just to go for the oil and filter and save a whole lot of time...

If you're taking the side PTO cover off anyway, before you start taking things apart from the top, you might see whether you or your son has small enough hands to remove and replace the brake band through there. I've never done it that way myself but there is a recurring "rural legend" that if one is careful not to twist the band and mess up the lining one can do it that way. Let us know if you do manage that, it'd be good to have a first-hand report.

This of course assumes that the drum doesn't need to be replaced too.

Could you just use your bucket/front loader for 'short term parking'? Some down pressure on it is most times as good as any parking brake - ?

HI,you can change the brake band with the cab in place. Remove the fuel tank, seat and seat plate, remove all the hydrolic pipe and all the bolts. Normally, with a helper, you can remove the hitch cover by hand, one in the cab and another in the rear of the tractor.. With a car engine hoist, it work fine. Make sure to lift the cover enough, it have a spring under for the draft control You have to remove the PTO clutch pack, to slide the band out, dont pull or twist. Change the gasket and the 3 teflon ring, maybe Oring also. Bernard le mecano Quebec Canada

Bernard,

I always enjoy reading your posts concerning the 74 and 84 series tractors. This was such a common problem that I wish someone would do an instructional video for brake band replacement. It is really one of the few weaknesses of these great old tractors. I sure wish that they had of fitted a mechanical park brake instead of that band.

Hi, the problem with the parking brake on 54 and 84 serie it"s not strong enough to hold the tractor and stall the engine if you try to go with the park on. I"ve fix many but I"ve installed a buzzer and a flashing light on the dash before the tractor leave the shop. They update with the 85 serie with a band on the rear differentiel carrier, better breaking force. Yes a mecanical park is the best but much pricey to repair if the lock engage in run.
