I"m replacing head gasket on a 1256 IH with a 407 engine. Should I use copper coating on gasket and should I replace the head bolt"s with new one? Thanks Eddie

If it is one of the old sandwich gaskets I would just grease it and tighten it down in sequence. If the old cap screws look good and the threads are good I would just reuse them. If Studs and the threads are good and the middle is not stud is not showing signs of rust or deterioration I would use them too.

Unless things have changed since the last one I did install it clean and dry. There is sealant around the areas most likely to leak and adding any other sealant will defeat the sealing ability built into the gasket. Providing the engine has been running about the normal horse power setting the head bolts should be fine to reuse unless you see corrosion eaten into them.

I always thought aluminum spray paint was standard practice but I'm not gonna question anybody's thoughts. As far as head bolts I would reuse if in good shape. If you were doing a major out of frame overhaul then I would suggest new head bolts.

Using aluminum paint or Copper Coat works fine on metal sided sandwich type gaskets but all of the gaskets I have seen for a D407 have been a fiber composite layered over a metal center.

I have had them stick tight enough so that you could lift the front of the tractor off the floor when trying to get the head off. They can stick tight enough that you think you must have missed removing a bolt.
