300u band adjustment.

With the linkage cleaned up I was able to make the adjustment in the manual and get it to where the PTO only would turn with my 8" punch thru the hole when in the center position. Thought I was good but when the tractor was running the PTO still was spinning in the off position. THIS time though, the PTO stopped spinning if I pushed the handle further down as if to unlatch it. So maybe I need to adjust one of the screws a little more. My worry is that it makes quite a howl when the PTO stops. Could anyone give me an idea if I am on the right track AND what the heck is with the howling?

Loosen the drive band adjustment 1/4 turn.
The mid position should be looser than turns with a punch (about 1/2 of that effort). Tighten the brake band about 1/4 turn. If still as difficult in the mid position, loosen the drive band another 1/4 turn.
If you look back at my directions they are not the same as the book. try those to see if they are better. Worn linkage pins and pivots that give even .030" of movement will reduce the real travel of the internal mechanism enough to cause the brake band not to grab.
You are very close!! Remember that your offset Key is off setting the center point of the lever. If the linkage movement to the rear is not adjusted to compensate, the distance moved from apparent lever center is not equal.
The squeal is due to harmonic vibration as the bands chatter on the drums in the unit. Some do some don"t. Check the level of hytran in the unit as well.
I would make a forked stick to find center, then adjust the rear linkage to its center. Let us know how it is working out. Jim

Well we need to get our tractors together. My 300U PTO stopped working yesterday. No drive to turn it. Im thinking bands also. I had adjusted it so the pto would shut off, makes it easier and safer to hook stuff up. Mine made the howling also when it was off. Interestingly, my two 350U"s don"t howl when the pto is stopped.

The howl is the only thing that has me concerned at this point. Trying to remember if the SMTA has the same noise. Thinking it does to some extent as the noise does sound familiar. Never gave it a second thought though because if it is doing it, it was that way when it came to me. Only other tractor I have with IPTO.
