460 axle clamps

At least a 4 foot cheater on a good wrench or heavy ratchet and socket is needed some times. Heavy duty impact works also. If you have a powerful enough impact the rim can be removed from the wheel and a extension used on the impact to get the bolts on the recessed side of the wheel. Go down through the slot in the cast wheel. You must have the big axles with 7/8 clamp bolts. Most times they will take a lot of pressure without breaking, but they will and make things harder. Use penetrant and if needed heat if you think they are going to break.

Many years ago on my first tractor the axle clamps were loose and being a car and heavy truck mechanic i had lots of toys to play with . I had a Craftsman 1 5/16ths box wrench and i put all i had on it . I could not get enough on the wrench to get them really tight , the neighbor was there that day and Ronny was just a little STOUTER then I and i asked him to give it just a WEEEEEE bit more . He put his big old MEAT HOOKS on the wrenchand put and extra turn on the bolts PLUS i now had a 1 5/16ths STARTER Wrench , I then figured that if i was going to play with tractors that i needed to invest in BIGGER tools and better tools . So the tool set went from at the time with the biggest wrench and socket being 1 5/16ths to over 2 inch with a S&K 3/4 drive set and Mac LONG combination to 2 1/2 inches. and several cheater pipes . Now a word to the wise here If your working on one ya might as well work on the rest now and also get a TAP and clean out the threads on all of them and NEVER SEEZE the threads , This way the next time you will not have to fight with it and even if you don't have to move the wheels maybe the NEXT guy will .

Get a good pull handle and use a pipe extension. If you use the box end a larger pipe may be necessary.
