6V Generator for M Farmall?

I recently acquired this generator with some other tractor parts. The guy told me he thought this was off of an M Farmall. The number on the pulley is 6746-0 and the number on the rear mount is 290. Can anyone confirm this or tell me what it might be for. Thanks.

Del - Looks like an H/M generator - including the adjustable pulley. There's not enough part numbers to confirm however (need the number off the Delco tag, if there is one).

(quoted from post at 10:37:02 06/25/13) Bob, unfortunately there is no tag on it. Thanks for the info.

If you check to see if the third brush is adjustable we could most likely come up with a Delco number that would compare to it.

The old black paint is a strong hint it has been through a rebuild shop. A lot of those shops rip the original tag off and put on a sticker so they can pretend one size fits all.

I don't see any screw holes on top for holding a cut-out. If it has those holes and an adjustable third brush, it is probably the version used on the letter series tractors through about '49/'50. If there are no extra holes and a non-adjustable third brush, it is probably the version used just after they went to a voltage regulator control.

There are no threaded holes in the casing. There was a sticker on it but all that was there was the sticker, the print was completely gone.

The key word is "third brush", and yes, yours appears to have the third brush. Most generators will have only 2 brushes, located 180° across from each other.

I apologize for stating that there were no threaded when in fact on closer inspection the holes (2) are threaded. You can see one of them in the picture. Also you can see where the sticker was.

That is a rebuilt unit, not original. And it is adjustable third brush as I can see the adjustment clamp holding the third brush plate. Originals never used that style band and it was common practice for rebuilders to remove the original id plate so LORD only knows what parts are really in them for field coils especially.

Most likely the generator is a replacement for Delco Remy number 1101423. It was used on M tractors with serial numbers 501 through 229910. It is also the most common one that was used an an H.

Pretty sure that's an adjustable 3rd brush genny (can see what I think is the brush holder clamp in the bottom photo.) There should be a slotted screw in the end frame that clamps the brush holder when tightened.

Incidentally a non-adjustable 3rd brush generator is the same except it is missing the clamping screw, and the 3rd brush is permanently fixed in the "maximum output" position.

The Delco Remy number for the non-adjustable three brush generator is 1100501.
