old oil filter canister oring removal made easy

Maybe everyone already knows this, but I was cussin the other day trying to break one out and squirted some 2 + 2 carb cleaner on it, let it sit for 20 minutes or so and it came right out, really soften the old rubber

Now you tell me after several busted knuckles and near swear words not to discount the dents and scrapes in the canister grove.

I just use an ice pick, works like a charm, been doing that for over 40 years. doesn't take the paint off either.

I encountered one of those gaskets that had been in there for so long that I doubt the carb cleaner trick would have worked. It literally came out in crumbs.

I have removed two of them and had an ice pick, small screw driver that barely made it and other odds and ends as well as a wheel brush on a high speed drill. One on a 41 B took several hours to remove and I am convinced it was original stock.
