Farmall Cultivision A won't run but about a minute??

I have a Farmall Cultivision A and when I start it, it won't run but about a minute and shuts down. I took the carb off and soaked in a gallon of Berryman carb cleaner for several hours. I checked the drain on the carb and there is fuel in the bowl. Any ideas as to what it could be? Thanks everyone. Larry

First thing is to make sure there is gasoline in the tank. Then make sure the shut-off on the sediment bowl is open. Might also be a good idea to CLEAN the sediment bowl. Also, there is supposed to be a filter screen where the fuel line fastens to the carburetor. It is probably full of crud also.

For what it's worth, soaking the assembled carb for an hour accomplishes nothing. You need to fully disassemble that carb, and then soak it, but the Berryman's is also an extremely poor choice. Berryman's is basically nothing more than brake fluid.

I cleaned the fuel tank and cleaned the sediment bowl. The tank has fuel in it. The valve is open on the sediment bowl going to the carb. Otherwise, there probably would not be fuel in the carb bowl as I mention in my OP. I took the carb completely apart and put it in the soak. When it stops running, I open the valve on the bottom of the carb and there is fuel running out.

This is the first time I've heard that Berryman's is a poor choice for a carb cleaner. What would you recommend?

When you open the valve on the bottom of the carb, how much fuel runs out? There SHOULD be a steady stream, about the size of a pencil.

GUNK brand carb cleaner is about as good as it gets, but thanks to the EPA, even the Gunk is not nearly as good as it used to be. The old time carb cleaner was powerful enough that you DID NOT get it on your skin. It would take the skin off your fingers if you did.

That Berryman's stuff is so weak that I can fully immerse my hands in it with NO ill effects.

No matter what you use, you need to finish the cleaning process with a can of aerosol carb and choke cleaner. Stick that nozzle right into the various ports and holes and spray until it comes out somewhere else.

Gene, it has spark and will start and run for about 30 seconds to a minute then is just shuts down. I'm sure the carb is good and clean as it will not run with the choke in the on position. You rebuilt my govenor for me about a year ago. This just started and I can't figure it out.

rustyfarmall, it has a good steady stream of gas coming out of the bottom of the carb when I open the valve.

Thanks, guys. Larry

nest time you try it, when it quits, give it a sniff of ether. if it hits, fuel is the problem, if it does not hit, electric, probably coil.

when you give it a shot of ether, leave the air filter intact. shoot the ether through the air cleaner cap.

Thanks, Ken, I've tried that and it will keep it running. My question is what is the fuel problem? It seems to be getting fuel to the carb. Larry

Try removing the fuel line and install it backwards into the sediment bowl. It will stick out to the side of the tractor. Turn on the fuel and see what you get. It should be a solid stream of fuel. If you have a fuel filter get rid of it. If your fuel line has a loop then get rid of the loop. A loop can cause it to run bad or shut down. If you get good fuel flow here it is downstream of the fuel line. If the tractor has been sitting for a while you might need to flush out the carb. These old units did not like to sit up and not run even back in the day. With the modern non fuel we are asked to use today it would be even worse. It appears you have either a blocked fuel line or a clogged carburetor. It takes longer than a minute for the coil to heat up and shut the engine down. By the way, how did you clean the tank?

if you can try to get the main jet out if you take that 1/2 plug out its in there will need a flathead screwdrive and it might not come if so take a pin and stick it through it and blow out with air

Yes it has spark but when it stops does it still have spark. As soon as it stops check for spark quick. How long does it take till it will start and run again. A bad condenser can cause your problem as you describe as i have had the same problem as you describe.

Gene, it does seem like it gets a little warm and then shuts down. It takes a couple of minutes before it will start again. I guess I'll replace the condenser.

you may want to get some help. carb needs to come apart. check needle and float to ensure that it is free and working.

then clear main jet.
