Farmall H starter

I am trying to remember but it seems that i read on this forum about a new starter design for a farmall H/M etc. I just finished a restorattion on my farmall H (I will post pics next week) and now the starter is locked. I know how to get it unlocked, rock it take it out its just annoying after a paint job to have to do it. Does anyone know where to get this mysterious new starter, does it work better, or should i just get this one rebuilt.

I usually have to loosen the two 3/4 bolts some. Hit the starter button. If it spins then tighten em back up. No spin loosen a bit more. I have never had to remove starter.

Get it rebuilt, most of the new replacement ones are from India or China, had problems with the one I got for my 41 H.

You dont need a new one just get your serviced mitehave a bad ring gear that will lock any starter up because of bad teeth. Remove yours and turn the engine over slow and inspect the teeth on the ring gear. Also bad cables will not turn starter fast enough to enguage good.

GO for the Cushion drive pinion. (new style drive) it has no big spring, and seems to be much better, avoiding pinion locking. Many places offer it I think it is for sale here. (call to assure it is the correct small spring drive. Jim

Thanks for the help. I found the new bendex gear. How easy is it to change. Does the shroud around the bendex come off and then just swap it out? or does everything have to come out from the back. I dont mean to sound stupid but my tractor is three hours away and i can't really see it in my head.

It comes with instructions. When taking the starter apert, only take off the drive end so the brushes (other end) stay where they belong. (just easier, not horrible to fix. Jim

Last time mine hung up I simply loosened the mounting bolts a little and wiggled it. Has only done that once in the last 15 years.

Unless you have a starter without a center bearing this is not going to work.

Almost all H starters are going to have the center bearing. It is attached to the drive gear end frame so you can't get the armature and drive out of the end frame until the screw holding the center bearing are removed. You need to remove the case in order to get at those screws.
