International 684 Hydraulics

Hi guys, I read a thread on here about faulty steering and brakes on an IH 684. I had the same issue. I followed the steps (removed 1 1/8" plug on bottom of MCV) all that came out was the bung and spring and couldn't see or feel anything else. I put a tray under the valve and started the tractor and almost instantly got a jet of oil out and so stopped the tractor. There was nothing came out except oil, and so, confused I put the spring and bung back in and, steering works fine!! Only trouble now is that the loader and 3 point linkage is jumpy, slow and appears weak. Is it possible this is due to air in the system with taking the valve apart, and if so how do I bleed the system. Or is there another reason, did something come out that I didn't see? There was very little oil lost during the blow through so I don't suspect low oil level. Any help greatly received... Thanks in advance.

The flow divider valve for steering is in that bore. It should have come right out after the spring. Sounds like it is stuck or came flying out and you didn't see it. Not all that small though. Anyone else have a similar tractor around you could take a look at.

Hi Pete,
I thought maybe there was something, aroung 15mm O/D with a hole or recess up it which was still there after blow through, if that is the flow divider, and it's stuck, I don't get how the steering now seems ok. What does the divider valve look like and how should I get it out if its stuck. I don't know of anymore IH's near me. Thanks for the reply so far..

Hi Stuiart,
See below from Bernard le mécano Québec Canada archives:

MCV and Hydraulics:

Hi Joe, on the 454, the oil pump feeds the steering in priority, then the remote, hitch, PTO and brake. The flow-divider valve gives 3 GPM to the steering and 9 GPM to the hitch system. When the valve is stuck in the bottom, you have no steering, no PTO and if stuck in top, you have no hitch, no remote. Remove the plug and the spring, put a container under the hole, start the engine and pull the remote lever. The flow-divider valve goes out in the container. Sand the valve with a 400 sand-paper and try again. Change the filter if it's old. May be you have dirt on the oil, check in the filter housing when you open it. When the filter is full of dirt, it have a by-pass valve that open and allow the oil to go direct to the pump via a screen. In this case, dirt can go in the system and cause your problem.

To blow out the flow-divider valve, you have to pull the remote lever at the same time. Maybe it's stuck bad. Then with a concrete anchor, you can pull it, you place the anchor in the valve, screw on the bolt and pull out the valve. Hope this help you.
Hope this help you.

Hi, the relief valve is located under the MCV, it have 2 plug, the thin one is the relief valve. The large is the priority valve that allow 3 gpm to the steering and 9 to the hitch and remote, for a 574. Have you check for the high pressure test, check on remote and loader coupler. About +- 2500 psi at 1500 rpm, if not may be the trouble is the pump.

Item #13 in this the flow-divider valve:

Hi, remove the thinner plug under the MCV, remove the sring, place a container to catch the oil, start the engine and pull on the remote lever. The divider valve will go in the container. Stop the engine. Check for scratch on the divider valve and smooth with a 400 sand paper. Sometime you have to smooth in the valve bore.CaseIH send a kit to replace the faulty divider valve. Replace the divider valve with the small end up in the bore.Check your filter and change if it"s old, make sure to place the element toward the MCV and the screen in the cover. If the divider is stuck in the bottom of the bore, you have no steering and PTO and in the upper of the bore, you have no hydrolic power.Hope this help. Bernard le mecano Quebec Canada

Thanks Bernard, for now all seems fine, after standing overnight the hydraulics all worked fine this morning, loader, 3 point linkage, steering and brakes all fine. I guess I cleared some crud out when blowing through and the jumpy hydraulics was just air in the system from having the valve out. I'll bear your comments in mind should I have problems again. Thanks. Stuart (Derbyshire, UK)

Stuart, that problem is more than likely from dirty hydraulic oil that has been in the tractor way too long. You should change it, and the filter as soon as you can. About 9 gallons in that system.
