Need help with valves

On our last tractor ride it seemed like everyone was able to run off and leave me on my old C. I got to listening to the exhaust and it seems to have a strange almost gurgling sound compared to my other farmalls. I don"t here this from the seat but standing right next to the muffler at idle. Thought I would check my valve lash and look for a bent push rod or something of that sort and I noticed that where the rockers do not sit in the middle of the little do dad like I would think they should. Is this a problem and if so what should I do to correct it. Can I adjust the valves accurately with some valves centered up and two that are not like the ones in the pics?

Probably can't get an accurate reading with the usual wide gauge. I bought some narrow gauges for mine -- actually made for spark plugs and 0.001 over where I want to set them. But your problem is not valves -- a C only goes about 10 mph with standard tires.

Wewe it mine I would have the rocker tips resurfaced (a good head repair shop will have the setup on the grinder) then i would shim the rockers over so they are centered (or close). NAPA or bearion companies will have shims (valve spring shims might be a good place to start, they are in the correct category of thickness. Jim

Ours was like that when I went to adjust the valves, I took the rocker shaft all apart and shimmed them so they line up. Fastenal has shim washers that worked great.

Have seen lots of rocker arms like that it is just ware as the spring between the two rocker arms keeps pressure forcing the rocker arms against the stands and lack of lube causes ware , Yep you can shim them you can regrind the contour on the ends of the rockers and you can get a good valve set when done . as for your ground speed make sure that your getting full RPM of the engine with a good tach and adjust as needed to factory spec. Then IF you want you can TWEAK it 10-25% jump up to the next tire size bigger . Now if you want a tractor with ground speed that will blow the hat off going down the road then ya want my S/MTA setting on 16.9x38's running 2050-75RPM that makes her run real close to 30 MPH on the road . Or get a Farmall 460 gasser and TWEAK the gov. add tall 15.5x38' s added in a gov. spring over ride so that when you bury the throttel you over ride the gov. spring and let her run on up to over 5500 RPM and that will get you real close to 70 out on the road. IF your crazy enough to run a narrow ft. down the highway like that.

DON'T ask how i know.

Jim, I like your idea and plan on giving it a try. I hope this is not a dumb question. When I shim them over to get them to line up correctly, will that throw off the way the push rods line up or is there enough slop on the push rod side that it won’t matter much? I know that my questions show that I don’t have a 1/10th of the knowledge you guys have. But I do enjoy learning something new for me. Give me a few days and I will try and give an update how it went.
