H distributor slop

How much play in a distributor shaft is too much ?

I'm having trouble with my H starting. After going through the ignition three or four times I see that the bushing in the distributor is shot except it doesn't look like there is a bushing in there.

Has anyone come up with a fix that does not entail electronic ignition ?

Thanks

Greg

.001 is about max. Rebushing the housing and finding a unworn shaft (or having your shaft built up and turned down) will do the trick. The bushings are not hard to find as stock size Oilite type bronze. Jim

Depending on the wear on the shaft I have purchased correct OD bushing ans fitted the inside so it just barely slides over the shaft. If shaft is not worn too much your might be ok. Remember .001 at the shaft gets you much more at the points gap. Probably 3 or 4 times. That varies due to distance from rubbing block to points contacts.

My .001 was measured at the cam! I agree. I have had success making a bushing that was longer than the original. I needed to be careful not to interfere with the other components but it worked to bridge wear on the shaft. Jim

For all the 40 years I worked at IH they never had a replacement bushing but they do now days. It is over 40 bucks but fits nicely. Remember, oil lite or sintered broze, what every they are called cannot be reamed to size as that closes the pores so no lube will penetrate thereafter. Most likely your entire distributor is worn though, shaft, weights, weight pivots, springs and maybe even the cam.
