574 parking brake

Hello,
I was wondering if there is more than one adjustment on a 574 parking brake. Mine won't hold at all when pulled up. I tightened the cable by tightening the jam nuts right behind the handle. Got the handle so tight that I could no longer pull it up to the first notch but still had no parking brakes. The foot brake on the right side works but the left does not. Will try and bleed it later tonight but figure that should not affect the parking brake.
Any ideas.
Thanks, YC

Hi YC, someone has driven the 574 with the parking brake on and stripped all the brake material off the parking brake band and may have also damaged the parking brake drum.
This is a common problem with the 74 series tractors. The newer series had a flashing park brake light on the dash.
The hydraulic filter is probably clogged with brake band/drum bits but the problem could have occurred 30 years ago and the band/drum bits have been filtered out years ago.

Hello,
Thanks for the note. I hope there is a little left on the band for I take it the band is inside the final drive along with the rest of the brakes. Seems like a huge job just to work on the brakes on these. Removing final drive etc.
Was hoping for an easier fix.
Thanks again,
YC

The parking brake band and drum are under the seat on the drive shaft to the diff. The foot brakes are on the final drive assembly and the axle housing has to be remove to replace the leaking O-rings on the brake piston. Before replacing the O-rings on the foot brakes, check the hydraulic brake lines on top of the transmission by removing the sheet metal cover over the transmission. Also check for leaking brake master cylinder.
Park brake band replacement requires removing fenders, fuel tank, seat and deck plate and 3pt rock shaft housing. According to my brother's local CaseIH mechanic, replacing the park brake band with a damaged drum will not solve the problem and to replace the drum is many $$ more.

It is a low slung tractor anyway, bet I can jump off and chock the wheels before it goes too far in most cases :). Not near as handy a brake set up as either my F656 of 1466. Leave it to the English....
Thanks for your help. Sounds like a winter project.
Cheers,
YC

Jimb2 is right about the park brake. Ours has not been good for 20years. We just leave it in gear when parked. With a loader on it the bucket will keep it from rolling setting in the shed.
It hardly ever gets hooked to equipment. If needed we just shut it off with it in gear.

Thanks,
Much easier to change out the starter than the parking brake it seems. How does the 574 do with a loader? Does it take an IH 2250?
