OK, I'm getting tired of my front wheels coming off the ground when I'm dragging a log out of the woods. I see on my frame (Farmall H) up near the front, 2 holes drilled and tapped. Well, 2 on either side for a total of 4 holes. Does anybody happen to know what size bolt goes in there? TIA

I agree with Dachshund. tractors can flip easily pulling logs. Picking up the front of the log by short chaining is a no no. (it is done often, but loving ones family and being their for them is sufficient reason to make a skidder trailer to lift the logs. so that the weight is on the trailer not the drawbar. Jim

I generally pull them on the ground with a 10 or 20 foot chain. I kinda like being on top of the tractor rather than have the tractor on top of me. So if I get the front end up even just a little, I get on the clutch quick and go trim the log a bit. I'm not one to say stuff like "Hey, hold my beer and watch this."

Get a skidder! Problem solved.....
Even with a long chain - that log can dig in, and pull backwards faster than your clutch foot can react.

All these others posts are RIGHT, I should have said something to you about pulling logs with a farm tractor too. Someday your foot will be a little slow or slip off of the clutch pedal. Then you woun't need to know the size of the bolts holes.

Are you hooking to the drawbar?

I have never got front wheels off the ground when hooking there. Maybe I have been lucky.

are you hooking chain on swinging drawbar that goes to belly of tractor or to the uframe of drawbar.makes a differance.years ago i knew a guy that broke swinging drawbar and to finish plowing put clevis on u frame, was very light on front that way

Hi Dan,
If you have a 3pt hitch on your H, I would highly recommend purchasing some type of 3pt logging winch like the one shown in this youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=DxrD_d_kpyQ

I have hauled thousands of logs out of the woods with various models of tractors using the 3pt hitch drawbar. Not a very safe practice with a smaller tractor.
Several years ago my brother purchased a used 3pt logging winch at an auction sale and it is 100% safer. The front of the log is not dragging on the ground so cannot snag a root or rock but if it does and the front end of tractor goes in the air it will stop when the bottom of the logging winch hits the ground. Also with a long winch cable you don't have to back off the trail very far risking putting a stub or rock through your rear tires.

BE VERY CAREFUL!! In our area, about a month ago an older farmer was crushed by his tractor when he was attempting to pull cedar stumps out of his pasture with the chain hooked to a 3pt hitch drawbar.
