Fuel line on a Cub

I've posted a couple of times about how to tell what voltage on a Cub that I am going to get running. Found out it was 12 volts so today I took a battery out of one of my tractors and tried starting the Cub. It cranks like crazy but wouldn't start. Found out the tractor hadn't been run for a couple of years and was running poorly when it got parked. A little investigation and it turns out the carb is full of junk and not much gas coming even through the sediment bowl. Also took out a cup of water. It has good compression and spark so at least now I know what has to be done. My question is this tractor doesn't have a screen just before the carb like an H and M does. Is it supposed to have one? Also it has live hydraulics and a one point hitch. Its a 1947 which looks like its first year production. Was live hydraulics available at that time or could this be an add on.I'm going to order a carb kit and a couple of other things and should have it running and mowing grass by next weekend. That little Cub makes my A look like a large tractor.

Yes, there is supposed to be a screen in the sediment bowl. Sounds like you need to flush out the tank. First I would try removing the sediment bowl from the tank. Then get some 3/8 pipe fittings, some hose and rig up a drain to a container. Then flush out the tank with some diesel fuel. That's safer than using gasoline. Get the tank and lines as clean as you can. Go to NAPA and get a no. 3032 fuel filter and install that in the line between the sediment bowl and the carb. After you get the carb cleaned and a kit in it, I bet you will be good To go.

Yes the Cub came out in 1947, they have live hydraulics, the one point hitch came out in a boot 1954 or so, I don't know the exact year.

-There should be a small screen in the carb gas inlet.
-If your tractor is a '47, then the hydraulics are an add on. They were not available for a Cub till about August of '48.
-The fast hitch (one point) wasn't available for a Cub till Nov '54.

I buy extra sediment bowl screens and gaskets and change every year or two. I would buy a new elbow fitting with screen that fits into the carb. The fuel tank screen and carb screen do a great job of eliminating junk in the carb. I've cleaned/changed many screens but never had to do a carb cleaning on 3 IH's (1 cub and 2 140's) in 30 years.
