farmall 460 hydraulic fluid moisture prevention

I have a Farmall 460 and the Hy-tran in it always collects moisture. I heard somewhere you could put a bottle of isopropyl (alcohol) in with it to keep the moisture out. Does this work or is there something else I can do to keep it out.

Well if you only use the tractor for shot periods or it sets out then you will always have a problem.keeping the filter changed helps some . Keeping the oil changed like your supposed to help. Tractors that set have more problems with this then ones that get worked hard . When a tractor sets for long periods condensation build up inside and if you crack the drain plugs you can drain off SOME of the moisture before starting . We do this on the tractors we do not use during the winter months in the spring when we wake them up and i have drained off more then a gallon of water from them when that sat in the barn all winter with out being used. This spring i got about a half gallon out of the 806 before we started it fro the first time and had to change the hyd. filter three times to get the water out of her and with it getting pressed into heavy tillage pulling five bottoms to finish up the plowing and pulling the 18 foot disc over all the corn ground twice that cooked out the rest. Today i am going to change the hyd. filter again just to make sure .

Exactly what Tractor Vet says.

Incidentally adding IP (or any other) alcohol DOES NOT keep the moisture out! Rather it mixes with collected water and helps keep it dispersed in the oil. This makes the water less likely to settle to the bottom and thus harder to drain.

Hytran already has additives in it to hold any moisture in suspension. All adding isopropyl alcohol to the transmission will do is make the isopropyl alcohol manufacturer rich.

IMHO you can keep 90-95% of the moisture out by simply keeping the tractor inside when you're not using it. We've got tractors that haven't had their hydraulic oil changed in 20-30 years and there is no sign of major moisture contamination in the transmission or hydraulic oil. All we've ever done is park the tractors inside at the end of the day and only run them in the rain when absolutely necessary.

This is in Western NY state, plenty of humidity, plenty of wild temperature swings, plenty of rain and snow...
