working on early 4020 syncro range. when put in park the tractor will coast and you can hear the transmission stripping. I took off platform and top trans cover. when put in park the front shift collar you can see moves back and fourth when rocking the tractor. the teeth that the collar slides over on the gear look good. they still come to a point on the end and are not rounded. the little spring is on the shift cam. it looks like the front shift collar does not go on to the front gear far enough all the time. but when you keep rocking the tractor eventually it will go on farther and lock in park.im thinking that the collar isn't always sliding on the front gear far enough for some reason.the rear shift collar slides on all the way and locks fine. what else should I be looking for? thanks for any help. joe.

If you own other Deere's I would leave it in the shed and burn it. If there are IH tractors present remove the 4020 from the shed and burn it.

In farmed with a 66 4020 diesel back in the day.
Mine was a power-shift not a sychro-range.
I understand the shifter adjustments on those were always pretty tricky to adjust, but once you had them dialed in they worked pretty well. That is, with a good operator on board, many novices were guilty of really messing the adjustment linkages up.
I am sure there are many experienced owners over on the Deere forum who can help.

I work with a neighbor that has a few synchros. Like you said, when they are new and adjusted they work really well. I have seen quite a few that will grind in this gear or that. I have never seen one that ground into park.
