'H' Rear Axle Question

Gotta ask, I just don't see the reason; why is there a one-inch "drop" at the outside end of the 'H' axle casting? The outside 6 inches or so of this casting "drop" about an inch. The axle and bearing rest in the bottom of this casting. Never have seen the reason for the "drop".

The drop helps retain oil for the outer bearing if you are working on un even ground, The capillary action of the axle as the oil is going around the bull gear works the oil out to lube the bearing, if it gets too full goes back to the housing.

Not going to say your answer is wrong. Makes me wonder about it though. Since the original outer bearings were shielded on the side to the transmission and greased from the outside.
