6 volt regulator and a 8 volt battery ?

How do I set the volt. regulator to charge a 8 volt battery? I took off the top of the reg.cover and fooled with the two adjustment screws as I watched the volt charge gauge. Still less than half(Discharge)on the gauge. Now what?

Don't know about your regulator or guage, but when I used an 8v. on my S-55 Oliver, I didn't change a thing. Both would start the tractor easily at first, but the 8V would outlast the 6v. 4 or 5 years to 2. I see a lot of "not worth it" or "don't do it" on this forum, but all I can do is tell you my experience. The guage on mine with the 8v barely registered a charge.

With it running, and the gen Arm wire connected to the VR arm terminal, ground the field terminal on the gen with a jumper(connected to the regulator or not, it does not matter) if it now charges some you know the issue is in the Voltage regulator. *.5 volts or so may be all it will deliver, but it should charge with a Voltage regulator that is good.
Adjusting the relay with the smaller terminals a little tighter, and making sure the contacts are clean, might work. (I won,t make noise about it being 8 volt) Jim

When installing a 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system, you are supposed to adjust the cut out voltage to about 8.8 volts where it closes, and the voltage regulator to about 9.5 operating voltage. You need a good volt meter and know which screw does what to do it . I did quite a few many years ago but it never was a very successful conversion. With today's higher cold crank voltage batteries it is even less desirable in my opinion. When you work at a dealership one often has to do what the customer or owner wants and not what the mechanic thinks.

The ones i have worked on owner did nothing just added the batt and used it both owners said they did nothing to the charging circut both had been that way for years one was on a C other was a SC. I repaired other problems so i didnt make any changes to the charging circut as both batts were charged according to the hydrometer readings.

I know this the red forum but(and I have both) I put 8 volt battery in my 45 B two years ago and that was the best thing for me.. Now it turns faster with the pedcocks closed that it used to with them open..lights much brighter, but i did anticapate a headlamp going out once in a while so i bought a cuople extra and have not replaced on so far.

Either your regulator is no good, or your generator is no good, or you have a grounding problem.

Did the generator charge the 6V battery before?
