slipping out of gear

I just took my new 1948 M for a 17 mile poker run. (I drove there and back 15 miles each way too) My tractor kept slipping out of fifth gear. Never going up hill or down hill, only on flat road , when there was no load on the motor. Not every time but it seemed like more towards the end of my trip. I had changed the gear oil too. The oil that came out was good, I didn"t know so I changed it. I put in 85-90 wt. I don"t know what was in there if it was 85-90 or 85- 140 wt. It was pretty thick tho when it came out. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong to make it do that ? Thanks for any help. Mike

Your bungee cord is to weak. Joking aside some things to check. Some you need to remove the belt pulley gear box and some the trans cover.
Play or bad bearing where the trans main shaft pilots into the input shaft. Also check the input shaft for play. Splines worn on the input shaft where the 4th and 5th slider gear engages the shaft, also the teeth condition of the 4th and 5th slider where it locks to the input shaft. Weak spring or worn ball that holds the shift fork in place or worn or bent shift fork.
With no load on the transmission you may be able to get a idea about the detent balls, springs or slot by seeing if the pressure to move shift lever from third to neutral is about the same as moving shifter from 5th to neutral. Fifth to neutral is usually a little less pressure.

At the risk of comparing apples from a different tree, I had the same problem when I restored our Minneapolis Moline UB. It would stay in 5th gear only under load. My dad used it for years on a feed grinder/mixer and our standard procedure was to start the loaded mixer in 3rd and do a "grinding shift" to 5th, then proceed to the hog barns. Upon investigation, rounded teeth were the problem. On a UB, 5th gear does not engage as fully as other gears by design, I suppose because of the lighter load. My only remedy was to replace the gears from a salvage tractor (or a bungee cord at first).
