Cultivator Dirt Shield Question

I'm painting the cultivator dirt shields and going to put them on the Super C. Are the shields supposed to just float along on the ground. I don't see a way to adjust their height. Also, does it matter which way they are turned when I bolt them to the cultivators?

They float over rocks and dirt ridges, but are restrained to a set lowest position by the bracket to a given height that allows little soil to flow onto the small plants (on the IH ones I have seen). the parallelogram formed by the links are from front top to shield rear bottom, otherwise they stub in and break off. IIRC they mostly float over rocks, ridges, clumps etc as the other poster said. Slanted end toward the front. There should be a piece of light chain to hold them just touching the ground when shovels/sweeps are at working depth.

I remember them as being held slightly off the ground, maybe 3/8" to 1/2" by a piece of chain, when the cultivator depth is set by the T-C stops. Naturally due to the uneveness of the ground, they could touch or float higher. This would form a nice ridge beside the corn or bean row.
Most of the time for small corn, we used what we called "rotary shields" which were like 4 rotary hoe wheels that ran right down the row. This did two things, took small weeds out of the row, and allowed you to drive faster the first time through.

They should be adjusted so that dirt will push up underneith and around the plant, but not cover it.

When a cultivator is adjusted correctly, it is a work of art. Nothing left standing except the crop.

Shield rib goes to the outside of the row.

Chains are gone or the bracket has a stop you can set for height. Soil conditions will vary as to set for height also size of the plant you are cultivating there is no given height its all soil and plant height as to how much dirt you want around the plant.

There is no single right answer for all styles of shields. The one on eBay, the clip at the upper left of the picture is rotated to act as a stop for the left link. The clip is held in place by tightening the bolt that holds it.

(quoted from post at 01:29:13 06/11/13) throw those damn things in a pond. if you don't cover up a plant once in a while you ain't covering up weeds.
Says the guy that couldn't figure out how to set them?

As a young boy I had to walk behind the two row cultivator all day and uncover any corn that got covered up while dad drove the tractor. We grew the corn in the bottom fields along the creek and lots of arrowheads and other rock tools were to be found so guess I looked at it from a different view then walking all day in the dirt. I think after five or six years I had a nail keg almost full, Hal.
