i'm tryin to put an alternator on my farmall H and it wont fit under the hood. using an old style chevy alternator. dont know the year or model number other than it fits a chevy car. what will fit under my hood?

Something to try. Take the original generator bracket & turn it upside down. Raises the alt just enough to get near a narrower part of the valve rocker cover. Have seen a few done this way, gives a good quarter inch of room to play with.

I installed what I guess is the 10SI alternator, and it fits with a dollar-bill"s thickness to spare. To re-install mine, it is so tight Ihave to hook the drive belt on the pulley, then pivot the alternator down to the bracket and then slide the mount bolt in. It just BARELY fits, I think that"s the nature of the beast.

Forget the Delco 10SI and use a Hitachi No. 14231 alternator which was used on late 1970"s Nissan pickup trucks. It will fit fine and still have room for adjustments and is quite simple to install on a H, Hal.
P.S. Email is open if you want some more detailed conversion instructions as I converted a 1951 H several years ago using one with no problems.

Super H.homemade bracket.'Delcotron' alternatorThis one will start to charge as soon as the engine starts.....

I find the Hitachi to fit better on Farmalls. The Delco seems to fit better on Fords. I think the Hitachi was $35 or something close.

BTDT more then once and yes they will fit but you need a shorter belt or you need a drop down mount so it sits down lower then the hood. I have done it both ways and prefer the one that has it sitting under the hood.
