Been looking at tractors in the 85-100hp arena and was looking for positive/negative feedback of the IH 806. Mainly fuel consumption, starting, transmission & engine issues. Did they all use a syncro transmission with T/A? There's been some listed here on the photo ad's that look like some nice horsepower for the money. Did the 826/856 replace the 806?

856 replaced 806 Engine is nearly bullet proof it is alittle higher priced to rebuild then the 400 series engine. 8 speeds plus T.A. The earlier ones tend to shift harder then the late models. Late models will have 18.4-38 verses 18.4*34 on the earlier. The oil cooler on the left side of the engine will be larger on the late model also.
We have a 1967 bought new in the family has had a blower on it sense it was a year old and still use it regulary.

806 is darn near bullet proof . A good and again i said good 806 will start good in cold weather , BUT if they are getting a little low on compression or someone did not do the correct job on a valve job they will not start good cold . The D361 and D407 engine IS NOT and engine for the novice . THEY DO NOT have a scycro transmission so don't expect to shift it like a car or pick up . I have now and had many 806. the one i have now is getting on 10000 hrs and never had the head or pan off of it and this year it had to do what the 1066 does due to the rear end going out on the 1066 so the 806 had to pull the 5 bottom 16 plow and disc all the corn ground with the 18 foot 470 disc Ok so we had to drop to forth low to to pull the plow and disc she still hauled the mail well for being 1964 806 . And i can tell you this she ate some fuel at around 75-80 gallon a day .

I've never heard a bad word about the 806. I spent many hours on our 856. It ran like a Swiss watch and was a strong old thing. We had the engine rebuilt at about 13000 hours. That was a wonderful tractor that never should have left the farm. At the time we thought the 1086 with air conditioning was about the best thing invented, so Big Red went down the road.

the 826 is a different tractor...It was made to replace the 756 diesel and as a direct competetor for the JD 4020.It used the D358 German diesel. It was made in '70/'71 only.806 made from '63-'67.856 made from 67-71.As TV said,it only came with a nonsyncro (4X Hi/Lo) trans. Most had TA.The 806 (D361 engine)was probably the most bullet tractor IH ever made...

(quoted from post at 06:27:21 06/08/13) Wasnt the shifting linkage or something bad on the 806's after awhile ?

The shifting setup wasn't the greatest, but isn't as awful as most people make it out to be. After 45-50 years many have shifting parts that are pretty well worn out. If everything is in good shape under the covers, the turnbuckle joints by the levers aren't sloppy-loose, and the 2 captive bushings the shafts go through before entering the housing are in good shape, and everything is adjusted correctly, they'll shift ok. Parts are still available from CIH and aftermarket sources.

56-series and later setup was better. Still, if the parts are worn out, they are worn out.

A very good tractor. Individual history is the largest issue. No synchronized shift and the D361 can be expensive to overhaul. A good 806 I would be happy to have.
