broke the wobbler on haybine the other day. may be running haybine to fast/hard. have no tac or rpm gauge on farmall 400. how much should throttle the engine. replaced wobbler with used one, i dont"t want to break it again. any help or advice would be nice. thank you.

Run him wide open/pto speed! Those wobblers just break sometimes. Its worse to run them slow.Puts more strain on everything to run slow and they wont do a good job. They are designed to run at rated speed,so do it!

I run a NH 499 behind a 1256.I run full/pto speed. The tractor has PLENTY of power, even at low speeds. In the HEAVY hay I was cutting today, the swather needed to run at full speed.Slow speeds cause sickle breakage, knocks more u-joints,causes other problems, and will not 'feed' or 'blow' right.

thank you for the reply deltared. a fellow at work told he never runs his full throttle. i will experiment a little on a smaller field as soon as the weather clears.

These machines are made to run at "rated speed".They give the best performance, and thats where I run em.Kinda like the old neighbor who always runs his baler at half(or less)throttle cause"it runs too fast".Says he doeasn want to wear it out. Then he cant figure why it makes loose, mishapen bales and seems to go through a lot of shear bolts.NewHolland 315. obbler huh? That's another name I've heard for that. I'm with everyone else though. Run it and push it. They are designed to sing, so let it sing. If you are feeling scared still get a tach for it, but honestly if the machine is in good mechanical shape running it at 540 rpm shouldn't hurt it at all. Even if you run it faster it should be ok. FYI, the 400 PTO will spin at 540 rpm when the engine is at about 1450 or so. The maximum RPM of that tractor isn't much more than that if I recall correctly (1500 I think). So if the governor is set right you don't really have anything to worry about IMO.
