calling CNKS planter ID - continued

I looked through the 185 parts book, and while some parts are correct (mostly the planter base, seed plate drive, & large capacity hopper), the chain drive & sprockets, or "transmission" doesn't look right. No pictures eiter of the wide flat shoes under the whole unit.

Any idea what planter number was prior to 185 ? For this area could have been "corn" or "cotton" models

As I understand the 185 is a unit planter for tool bar mounting with any amount of units in any width. Yours is not a tool bar so it would not be the 185 style units. The other model numbers listed as possiblities go to Messicks site and try each one and see if you get a parts match then you have the model number but eliminate any unit type planters as that is not it. When you try those numbers it might also possibly bring up other model numbers to try. Go back to previous post.

185 IS a 'unit planter'.I believe it was the first of the 'units',introduced in the mid '50s.As was said,a unit planter is a single row unit that you attach to a tool bar (2 1/4 diamond) in any row width you desire.

Where I used to work there was a 4 row 185 unit planter, the only one I have ever seen. The one in your picture looked similar, except that it is not directly mounted on the tool bar, also the hoppers are different. I imagine the mechanisms in slightly different models were about the same inside the hopper, at least for row crops. The openers could have been modified to look like that. I used it a few times for grain sorghum but basically it did not space the seed correctly, must have been worn out.

We planted many acres of cotton with this I.H. 184 planter.
