Small V-8 in anything?

Not really a IHC person, but was there ever a small diesel or gas V-8 used in any of the IHC tractors, combines, trucks or anything? When I mean small, I'm talking from 300ci.-400ci. Thanks!

Well, for one, the gas 345 V-8's were used in 915 and 815 and (perhaps other) combines!

The only gas V8s that I know of are V-304, V-345, V-392, V-401, V-461 and V-549. The 345 on up were usually found in trucks.

A few more.
Had a 267 in a 65 p-up.
478 replaced the 461
DV550 was the diesel version of the 549, weird set up, idled on 4 cyl, ran on all 8 above about 600 or so rpm. High speed, cruised around 3000 rpm, intended to be direct swap for gas rigs without changeing rear end gears. Replaced by the 9 liter that ran on 8 all the time.
Outfit I worked for had at least one of each of the gassers before swapping over to diesels.

It's not quite what you asked but IH also built several "half V-8" 4-bangers. The Scout originally had a 152 cid engine (half of a V-304) and later this grew to a 196 (half a 392). The one cylinder bank was chopped off then the engine was partially "straightened up" in the chassis which left the oil pan setting at an angle. Virtually all the internal parts were common between the 4- and 8-cyl versions.

Forgot to mention it before but there was even a factory turbocharged version of the 152 engine available in the Scout for a few years in the mid-60's.

The company I worked for used the 345 in about four tractor and the rest of the IH tractors had the RD 450 inline 6 cylinder gas engine and later on the whole fleet went diesel.

S.D.L., We had 605 IH engines on a couple of Irrigation wells. Tough old engines. But a pain to start. The Starters were good, But the Ignition system just had that quirk!! It always took 3 pickups on 12 volts to start. Just a pain all the time, but they were tough running. Turning an Amarillo Gear head @ 4:5 ratio on 300ft wells pumping right at 1000 gal/minuet. Any way the 605 is in that hunt too, though the 605 is an Industrial engine to my knowledge.
