Farmall 656 Problems

I recently had a local mechanic repair my hydraulic pump and clutch. Now I still have a growling noise coming from the hydraulic pump as if it is low on fluid. I also have no brake on the left side. The break locks the wheel or won't engage it makes a noise like a slipping gear when you press the pedal on that side. Is it possible the mechanic could have done something to mess the brake up on the left side when he split the tractor? What could be causing the noise from the hydraulic pump? He even replaced the drive shaft to the pump and the gear on the pump. I'd like to know whether I should call him and ask him to look at it again or find a new mechanic.

As far as the brake I see no connection to pump replacement. If the pump sounds like it it sucking air like low fluid, plugged filter, I would guess one of two things. First, he put in a larger than original pump, second, he didn't get a new suction tube or damaged or misadjusted the seal on tube between pump and housing. Every body wants more oil flow and the 656 has all it can handle with stock pump unless you add the after market filter extension which helps. Now, I will a add, the gears take a wear pattern and the pump is driven off lower pto gear so that would (I assume have not been replaced. Lots of growly, noisey 656 tractors in the country. Also, there are different gears and pumps used as IH changed the gear ratio of pump, used a larger pump and slowed it down to reduce noise levels so things get kind of mixed up. A flow rater test on pump would show up any areation problem.

656 was noisy hyd system when they were new, compared to 706 and newer bigger tractors. The brakes have nothing to do with trans or hyd system during a repair. These are mechanical actuated brakes and are more upkeep from year to year. That brake probably needs a clean-up and lube with graphite paste on the metal to metal guides after you clean off the rust.

Darren 656 did not have noisy hydraulics. You maybe pulling in air from the seal on the short tube from pump to filter, as far as the gear noise maybe he put in wrong gear or gasket between pump mount and TA housing. I don't see how he could screw up the brake but then who knows.

As a "local independent mechanic" myself, I would urge you to let him know you are hearing things you aren't used to and let him work through it with you. Unlike the dealer guys, we do not get to hear feel see smell the same tractors over and over, we see all ages, colors, condition, etc. Some noises they come in with can be one that has been such for years, and ALWAYS after a repair I hear EVERYTHING... and if I fix everything, the owner has to take out a second mortgage. So long story short, treat him right and give him a chance and hopefully he will do the same for you. As far as your problem, I would agree with the wrong gasket behind the housing as first suspect. Other things depending on what all was replaced. And why these repairs in the first place? Engine clutch and hydraulic pump aren't hand in hand repairs on a gearshift IH

Ask for the old parts. Then count the teeth to see if they are the same gears. Then the gasket as already said could be different thickness. Like if he is one of those silicone mechanics for gaskets. That would make it to tight. If the old gear was worn enough to need replaced the one it meshes with might be worn causing the noise. I would guess he replaced the drive in the front of the transmission going into the back of the pressure plate rather than the pump gear. If so then he should have changed the seal and bearing in there too. Could have missed one of the o-rings between the pump and housing or it fell out during installation. Lots of food for thought.

Remove the third arm cover in the back of the tractor , there is a hose that comes from the suction tube for the hyd pump that goes to the top cover on the 3 point they get a hole in them and suck air. Bob

Thank you for all the info. I have checked that tube under the third arm and didn't find any sign of a leak. I was looking on the serial #'s listed and noticed this tractor was the 56th one made. Serial# 8557 S and this site shows 8501 as the first. Does that make it any more valuable? ;-)

Actually some did. My dad bought one new in 1967 - as a child I remember it whining - very noticable when at idle because it was louder than the engine. 40 years two overhauls and over 20K hours later it's still noisy.

The breaks sound like they are wet with oil on that side. Pull the cover and see if the pads are wet. You might need to clean them up and replace the seal.
