I've got a 73 and two problems on my hand. First, I can't get the pto to turn at all. This tractor was bought by my father-in-law about 20 years ago, but I just got my hands on it recently and want to use it to bushhog a little bit of the property. (converted 3-point). He said the pto worked with the mower a few years ago, but hasn't tried it since. Blades on the mower spin by hand, even when connected to the pto (engine off). But with the drive shaft disconnected, the pto won't spin. So...how hard is it to figure out what's wrong/fix the problem???

Second problem is the thing seems to run the battery down CONSTANTLY. Even when the key's out of the ignition, there's frequently no charge and I have to jump it. Runs like a dream when it's jumped.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What model tractor??? Instead of pulling the key, try pulling the ground cable off the battery. If it still goes dead, it is bad. If not you have a short draining it.

The PTO is strictly mechanical with a mechanical (not friction) clutch that must be put in gear when the tractor is stopped and the clutch is pushed in.
If you move the control lever, you should feel in engage. If it seems to not move far enough, let the clutch out (neutral) a little awhile pulling the lever. If the lever feels like it is disconnected inside it may be. Jim
