I have a farmall 300,the t/a seems to work when i get it engaged, seems to engage better in a high gear as opposed to a lower gear, when trying to engage in lower gear it seems to not engage right away, and make a whining noise, and very slow to engage, sometimes the tractor will roll to a stop and not engage, after several attempts to engage in this manner it will engage, my question is whether this is normal or is there an adjustment i need to make, any help would be apperciated

It might need adjustment, but adjustment won't fix what is wrong. It needs a new Sprag (one way clutch) at the rear of the TA unit. It needs to be split to do this. The only TA replacement to avoid (opinion gathered from here and other places) is one called mechanical diode.
This site, Hy Capacity, Kevin Meier, and other sources abound. Sprag clutch alone would be inexpensive. Complete TA replacement is in the 700$ area (shop! Jim

The only adjustment you need to make is splitting the tractor and installing a new one , unless it has the wrong oil in it. it should be running Hy Tran .

There are no systems that stop freewheeling on the small frame(older) mechanical TA systems. If there were, they would need special methods for disengaging that effect in direct. The hydraulic TA has a locking clutch too limit freewheeling. From experience with that brand, it is a reliability issue, nothing else. Jim

Only diode ta I have ever seen is a hydraulic ta. The diode is a ratchet system welded inside the upper ta gear which is a garbage part. This application is a mechanical ta which uses a ramp and 8 rollers which is the same principal as an old bicycle brake. Its job is to make sure the ta only turns 1 way and fights the centrifical force.
