Howdy -- I"ve a 1946 Farmall A --the PTO now just spins - key in gear is broken - The problem - I"ve removed the rear housing - there is a cone shaped gear on the inside of PTO -- all my efforts have yet to free the PTo shaft from that gear and housing - I"ve torn in from the outside looking for some kind of horse-shoe clip-all I managed to do was mangle a seal and ball-bearing set-up---- what am I missing -help Tom

When the key messed up the gear is now froze to the shaft you will need a press to remove the gear off the shaft. Its possible the shaft is now scored enough when the gear is put back it will not be a good fit and you mite need to replace the whole assy. Parts can be found at a salvage yard. I have one for sale if you need it. Yours should be the 1 3/8 spline. Make sure the shaft didn't bend when the key sheared.

Thanks for the comeback - oddly the gear can turn on the shaft - but even that - I figure a press will be involved - I was just worried about ruining the housing fighting with some unseen clip or retainer - thanks, tom

thanks for getting back -- that's the best photo layout I've seen - yes, a world of help - plus it includes the part info on the stuff I already mangled - where did you source that detailed info?
Thanks, Tom

It may be that the stub of the key has made itself a groove that it is now riding in. If so forcing the gear off may do more damage.
