I have 65 656 diesel 5 speed w/TA. When running there is a slapping/knocking sound coming from transmission housing. Its there in gear, neutral, TA or Direct Drive. Seems like its on the left side (if sitting in seat) around where the reverse idler gear is located. Could this be RI gear bushings? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately I think you will need to take the top off of the trans to find the problem. Probably a chipped or broken tooth. Fixing it before it shells another tooth (or much more damage) is likely best. Jim

so maybe a chipped tooth off a gear would make the knock every time that missing tooth came around? Would that still knock in neutral? Thanks again

No it doesnt, with TA engaged( pulled back) it tends to slow down, same thing in neutral with TA engaged.

Sounds like a chipped tooth on the constant mess gear and it will not heal it's self . More then likely this was caused by the transmission input bearing getting bumped at some point during a T/A replacement and one roller fell out and got under the gear . When one splits a I H tractor it is vary wise to place a heavy rubber band around the transmission input bearing to hold all the rollers tight when going back together and also be in perfect alignment and NO slamming jerking , pulling together with bolts . If they do not SLIDE together then your not aligned . If it is ONLY the constant mesh gear then your lucky as i have seen the bottom of the transmission busted out from a bearing roller getting under them .

If it's there when stopped in gear I would lean more toward it being something in the clutch or PTO. Nothing in the transmission is turning at that point.

My SM has a funny clicking sound in reverse. Been there since the last rebuild 30+ years ago. Dealer took it back down twice and couldn't find the problem.
Even looked for a missing tooth about 15 years ago when the left wheel locked up. Tooth off an old bull gear got caught by the current bull gear, luckily didn't shear anything off.

drove today and in reverse I didnt even notice the sound, but there in drive and N and more noticeable in direct drive
