H transmission seal

H transmission is leaking at the front. Have replaced the lower shaft seal, and the upper shaft seal is now leaking. Can anyone tell me how I go about replacing the upper shaft seal?

Thanks

Easiest Remove the Liftall. Remove the throwout bearing pilot shaft bolts. Remove the bolts in the Drive coupling (sometimes a pain), and photo it to assure correct refit. loosen the pressure plate (if it has 3 bolt holes in the rear edge, use 3 of the cover screws to unload the Pressure plate bu screwing the 3 bolts into these holes. Remove the clutch shaft. (hold your mouth right, and it will come out!) remove the nut in the coupling. Pry it out (it does come out) Remove cover and replace seal. Put the new seal in such that it rides on a clean smooth place on the coupling snout. (polished round and round with 400 grit) Put grease on the inside of the new seal to assure first run lube. There are many more descriptions of this in the archives. Jim

You do not need to loosen or remove the pressure plate.
You can take the whole assembly out if you juggle it right. That will let you check the pilot bearing on the top shaft and the bearings in the assembly.
If the seal is leaking chances are that one or both of the bearings are getting sloppy.

When loosening the drive coupling bolts(after the nuts have been removed) lock the coupling or shaft to prevent rotation and find a LONG handled combination wrench and turn the bolt to remove. Takes a lot of force (the bolts are tapered) to turn the bolts so an "extension" on the wrench is handy. It will "snap" when the bolt comes free. This process works much easier than trying any other method.

I must be missing something. The liftall is out, the coupling between the engine/transmission is disconnected, the bolt holding the yoke to the shaft is removed.

Now, it appears I simply need to remove the yoke so the seal can be installed around the shaft. How do I remove the yoke from the shaft? Or, am I going about this all wrong?

Thanks again for your help in what is probably a straight forward process to the experts who done this previously, but seems problematic to a first timer.

It is only held in by that center bolt (and time aggravated splines and a tight fit. They can be tough, but they do pry out directly forward. If the clutch shaft is still in place it may not come far enough forward. A small short jaw puller pushing on the loosened bolt might work. Jim

Screw the bolt in the hole some and rap it with a hammer once. That may knock it loose so it will move. I didn't tighten up my PP when I did this. I think I spent forever trying to find the one way that it would come out without taking anything else apart.

Thanks for everyone's help. We finally removed the yoke from the transmission without removing the pressure plate, etc. Here's how we did it: loosen the yoke retaining bolt enough to hang a 3/4' closed-end ratcheting wrench on the bolt head, then bolt a 1/4" thick steel strap (drilled to match the yoke bolt holes) across the face of the yoke, then back the yoke retaining bolt out using the 3/4" ratcheting wrench that was attached earlier. As the retaining bolt head pushes against the steel strap it pulls the yoke off the shaft. Everything is a tight fit, but there is just enough room to get the yoke off the shaft.
