play in left axle

I have a 1972 farmall 140 and I notice today that there's a lot of play in the left hand side axle. I got my brother to shake the wheel, and down where the gear that drives the distributer there is a half inch or more of play. I did not have time to look any closer today. Does anyone know what would cause that play in the axle. What would it take to fix it.

It is not clear to me they way you describe the problem. If you "shake" the wheel from left to right at the top, and the distributor gear moves up and down, then it would be bad bearings. If you shake the wheel fore and aft, and there is some play, then it might be the spline on the axel shaft or the bull gear worn. If you jack up that wheel, look carefully as the weight comes off the wheel, if the wheel moves at all independent of the tractor, the bearings are bad. Once the wheel is off the ground, put the transmission in gear and rock the wheel forward and backward to see where there might be some play at the bull gear.

Making some assumptions here!!
Assuming it is the front steering that is loose.
Assuming that the 1/2" of play is in a tie rod end under the front of the tractor where the center steering arm attaches.
The tie rod end may be worn radically and need replaced. (some may be adjustable, but with that much play, it likely needs to be replaced. OR
it could be the steering arm loose on the steering shaft. There is probably a woodruf key that is worn or augered out and loose. We need to know what is happening a picture would be good. Jim

What's "horizontal play"? Do you mean the axel shaft moves up and down at the distributor gear?
The bull gear is the large gear in the final drive. It slides onto the axel shaft and runs in the half moon oil pan under the final drive. The bull gear is driven by a small gear on the differential shaft. Ok?

What I'm hoping is that there is a axle shaft nut behind the distributer gear that can be tighten that will take out the left to right play.

Now that it is clearly the rear wheel. and also assuming it is axial play (in and out of the axle) not looseness as in wobble. The small cover in alignment with the main axle on the inside can be taken off for access to the inside end of the axle.
The bull gear is the big gear inside the housing driving the axle through the splines.
The diagrams also show the bearings and spacers. If the link does not work, try caseih.com select country, then Parts at the top. Then select the on line parts store big screen (looks like a computer screen) then select find parts by model then select search. Then put in Farmall 140 then select drive train, then final drive.

Thank you Janicholson. This diagram is exactly what I need. The problem is around parts no. 18 through 29.
Thanks

You are saying the left rear axle moves in and out take the cover off on the inside and tighten the nut that loads the shaft that should fix the problem. You say theres a gear on that shaft it will come off so you can get to the nut could be an easy fix. That shaft runs in 90wt oil so the bearing should be ok. Probably when they put the extension that runs the drive for fert or whatever it would have been used for they didn't have it installed correct.
