W4 Belt Drum/PTO

I recently completed a starter replacement on my
1951 W4. I had read previously that a plate could be
used to cover the Belt Drum opening & not install
the Belt Drum. After doing this I discovered that my
PTO no longer works. Is there a modification
required or must I reinstall the belt drum in order
for my PTO to engage ?

Thanks so much for the speedy reply.
The PTO has never been an issue in the past, until this recent starter repair. I was using it to run my wood splitter just before the starter screwed up.
When I pull the lever to engage PTO I get a light grinding as if the gear may be trying to engage, but that's it. Any suggestions ?

It still has nothing to do with removing the belt pulley drive or your starter repair.

It's just coincidence.

Light grinding means the sliding collar and/or linkage that moves the sliding collar is worn.

The PTO is easy to remove and service on a bench.

Does anyone have a detailed diagram of the PTO assembly for a 1951 W4? Not quite sure why it will not engage.

You can look at the parts diagrams online. I don't think any of the W series are online. I would guess an H would be somewhat similar. You might as well drain the oil and pull the PTO. I could guess it is the gears inside the big tube that engages the PTO.

Problem solved. Must remember to look at the simple
things first. It turned out to be a loose bolt on
the PTO engagement linkage that would not allow PTO
shaft to engage properly.
Thanks for all the help.
