Will an H mag/distrib bracket fit an M?

That's the drive housing that the mag attaches to, FYI. Same part, same size? That of course would include the internals, ie drive shaft, bushing etc. I also notice that the oil seal for the drive shaft is optional according to the parts manual. Is it really? My current set up shows oil seepage between the distributor and the bracket mounting flange. Maybe just gasket failure?

TIA

The bracket from an H will not fit on an M.

If oil is seeing through the crack between the engine block and the housing, it's a gasket problem.

Thanks mk for that. I was about to buy one as an extra thinking they would interchange. I'm glad I asked. Oh btw, the joint between the block and the housing is ok. The seepage is at the opposite end where the mag mates up. Same deal I guess, huh? I'm still wondering about that oil seal though.

3 housings were made for a H. Serial 501-268223 without oil seal. 268224-344863 with oil seal and a different drive shaft for the seal. Those 2 used the same bolt pattern to front engine cover.
Housing for 344864 and higher with oil seal and same shaft as the previous housing but a different bolt pattern to the front engine cover.
Also a replacement housing with a different part # from the original was made for 501 to 268223.
Also there"s a gasket between the rear of the housing and the ignition unit.

Thanks for that D Slater. I'm not sure what I have. I won't know till I break into it to see if there is an oil seal in there. The fact that it is a '49M tells me that there probably is an oil seal in there, but has failed causing seepage between the housing and the ignition unit. I assume that the seal is there to prevent engine oil from migrating into the impluse coupler, right? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes a 49 M came with a seal and it was to keep engine oil from passing out the rear. When the drive gear is removed the shaft comes out and you can see the seal. Probably lots of them have never been replaced.

Thanks. Now I know what I'm up against.

Little by little I"m learning about this tractor and all it's quirks. A person will never learn unless he asks. In the last 11 months since I've had this tractor, I've learned a lot thanks to you guys. There will be more questions later I'm sure, a lot more. I'm still very, very pea green.
