Grrrr… Farmall H Charging System Failure

Well, I had all the Farmall H 6 Volt Positive Earth charging system working nicely, but now…

I went out working on the tractor and had it going nearly all day. All was working well for about four hours and then the ammeter dropped to zero. I stopped for a break, started the tractor on the starter motor and the ammeter stayed at zero thereafter. No smoke, no sparks and lights all still work. Ammeter shows discharge when lights switched on. System just doesn't charge. Wiring is all new and all joints soldered carefully.
I guess the Voltage Regulator is the place to start?

check your ground on the regulator.

Super M was doing the same thing. I ran a seperate wire from the voltage regulator base to a good ground.

Ampmeter still didn't show a charge so I momentairly (sp) connected a test lead from the generator terminal to the battery terminal and "POOF", everything worked fine.

And yup, John T's trouble shooting chart is a good one to have. Good Luck

Chck voltage at the battery with an independent gauge to see whats going on.

Cjeck to make sure you have a good ground on the amp gauge box

Thanks folks. I'll check the ground connections tomorrow and see what happens. Might be an easy fix!
