Another issue I have is that there is no pto shaft out the back, just a plate covering where it should be. Is this difficult to replace?

The PTO is pretty much just a bolt on unit but could be hard to come by

I have H ptos but none for an M. They are just a bolt on and go type of deal, just drain the gear oil or park the tractor pointing downhill to keep the oil in. when you remove the plate.

There are early & later versions of PTO's. Cannot interchange without internal transmission changes.

The serial number will tell you what year it is. That is on a little silver plate riveted to the side of the tractor. Get the number that's stamped (dented) into the plate and look it up under the "Serial Numbers" on the left side of this page, or post it.

95% chance it's the later style. The early style was only used on 1939, 1940, and maybe 1941 models AFAIK.

"Hard to come by..." not really. If a tractor salvage yard doesn't have at least one M on the lot, it's not a tractor salvage yard. They only made over 250,000 Ms.
