WD9 has a knock.

I just spoke with a fellow who has recently fired up a WD9 that has been sitting for quite a while. It develops a knock which gets louder as the engine warms up. He said there is no knock at all when it is cold, and it doesn't matter if it's running on diesel or gas. Nor does it change when he cracks the injectors or pulls a plug wire.

Any ideas?

Rod bearings will do just that. They will also pound like Thor's hammer when you throttle it up quick or load up the engine. The crank will have to be turned or maybe replaced. Tell him to stop running it - he sure doesn't need a window in the side of the thing.

No worries. I have a couple spares.lol

Thanks fellas.
Bearing failure was my first suggestion too, but he said he had pulled the pan and checked the rod and main bearings and they were OK. I didn't ask if he had plasti-gauged them or simply did a visual, or if he checked them all, not just one or two.

Is there any chance a liner might be loose and jumping up and down?

Your description of the noise is consistent with having something stuck in the top of a piston and hitting the head. When the engine is cold there is enough clearance so it does not hit. As the aluminum piston expands with heat the foreign material starts to impact on the head.

This type of noise, unlike a loose bearing, is not likely to change much depending upon whether or not the cylinder is firing.
