IH 364 - head and gasket..LOOK AT PICS

this is the head and gasket I just removed of my international 364. It has a diesel engine model number BD 154. Should I have it cut...looks like some old damage too. Please comment.

This would mainly depend on how deep the "imperfections" are.
Someone experienced in milling cylinder heads & engine blocks would be able to first mike the deck height of your head (thickness) and measure the depth of the imperfections and go from there.
You can only mill off a certain amount & maintain the integrity of the head. A good machinist will be of more help, and what repair options would be available, it may be cheaper to rebuild another head, or to discuss how best to fix this one.

I took the head to a machine shop today.
He checked for straightness and said it
was okay.he said it would be okay to
take off a little bit of thickness to
try to clean it up. He wasn't too
worried about the dimples in the head or
damage.

It sure made some racket at one point in its life. I would not hesitate to use it. A skim cut to flatten the area between 2-3 is a great idea. It will certainly lower the valves a little. They should not protrude into the cylinder. Jim

The pits in #2 look like at some point there was a slight coolant seep into the cylinder. That looks very similar to what my head looked like. In my case the engine ran pretty well, The gasket didn't blow through like yours did. I just had a slow coolant leak into the oil pan when the tractor sat for a couple of weeks. My machinist explained that the pitting was typical of diesels that ran with a coolant leak into the cylinder

If the head had been removed previously, you might be looking at a poor job of torquing the head back on but you wont be able to ever prove that.

Hi John, worked on a lot of these engines over the last 40 years. Have the head faced and the valve seats cut also face the valves and grind them in. When you refit the cyl head torque it down to 80lb/ft and set all the valve clearences to 020th cold and you are ready to go. MJ
