Need help Please! H won't start/stay running.

I'm trying to get my H running to fix a driveway for the weekend.
I bought a new battery for it (battery reads 6 volts) but I have
nothing when I hit the starter switch. I cleaned up all
connections still nothing. I pulled the starter switch off thinking
maybe it was bad but it seams to work. So I cleaned it up and
put it back on and still nothing. I was getting frustrated so I
hooked jumper cables up off my pickup to the battery side of
the starter switch to see what would happen and it started right
up and ran great. But as soon as I removed the cables it would
die. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, thoughts? I
would really appreciate some help.

Thanks,
Jeff

If I pull the wires off the starter switch and touch them together shouldn't it turn over? Kind of like hot wiring it.

Is the engine not able to rotate? Remove the starter; it is likely stuck into the flywheel. Or try rotating the engine by putting it in 5th gear & rocking the back tire ahead & back.

It is positive ground. I cleaned the battery cables, ground, starter switch and even the post on the starter.

It will start and does run off my pickup. But as soon as I remove the power it dies.

It's not rocket science or magic. You *STILL* don't have a good connection to the battery.

Just "cleaning the connections" might not be enough. The cable may be corroded inside. The cable may be broken.

Test #1: Use one side of your jumper cables to connect the ground (positive) to the tractor's frame. If it runs you have a bad cable on that side.

A fully charged 6 volt battery should test MORE than 6 volts. Somewhere between 6 1/2 to not quite 7 volts would be normal.

Run off you truck battery but not the 6 volt battery says to me you got your self a bad NEW battery. Happens all the time now days BTDT. Got a new battery a few years back and sat it on a B I had. It would not start the machine. Trades it out with my truck battery and it started but the truck would not. Simple bad new battery was the problem and maybe your problem also

Stick a 12v battery in it and see if it will start won't hurt it if only running a minute or less. Dont turn on any lights. Also try to charge your six volt battery with a 6 volt only charger.

Yep, that happens but a few minutes with a meter will pin point his problem.

12 volts on the 6 system may just mask a bad connection also.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm trying to gather all the information I can get. The tractor is 1.5hrs away. It's a good battery. My charger kicks out when I hook it up and I wired a 6 volt light up to it and it stays bright. I think I'm going to buy some new battery cable qnd maybe a starter switch. The switch still seems funny to me.

Starter switch would not cause it to die after it starts but a bad ground cable would cause it and limit current to the starter as well. Clean the connection where the ground cable mounts to the frame of the tractor.

I don't recall you stating where the ground cable is attached to the tractor in your earlier posts. If you attach it to the closest starter to frame mounting bolt you will have the best and direct route to a proper ground. All of my 6 volt tractors are grounded in this manner and I have no ground problems as all of the starter cables have been replaced with new 00 size cables with soldered terminals during restorations as well. Hope this helps your situation as well, Hal.

If you buy new cables make sure they are 0 or 00 sized cables being it is 6 volts. If the switch is questionable then try a hot wire from the battery ignition side to the ignition side of the coil. Doing that will tell you if the switch is bad or if you have loose or broken wire some place

hook up your 6v battery positive to ground negative to negative.take a digital volt meter and hook it up to the battery red to gound and black to negative turn the key to start the tractor if the meter drop below six volts the battery is no good.I took back two battery befor i found a good one, charge the battery only with a 6v charger on ten amps trickle charged good luck
