W4 generator

So,I take the generator off my W4 ( didn't have belt to drive it since I bought it) and am told it's good. I trust the guy to be ryte. Put it on & it doesn't work .Was told you don't polarize a generator with cutout .Then I take the wire off to the amp gauge & put a test light in it's place. Doesn't light up .Am I missin something simple?

"Was told you don't polarize a generator with cutout"

THATS DEAD WRONG AND ALSO INCORRECT AND ERRONEOUS

A Generator needs Polarized the same as the battery is oriented so that when it starts spinning its trying to charge at the correct electrical + - Polarity !!!!!!!!!!!! Regardless if the control device is a Cutout Relay or a Voltage Regulator or a Rubber Chicken.....

"Then I take the wire off to the amp gauge & put a test light in it's place. Doesn't light up"

Im unsure just where and to which side of the ammeter and where the other test lead was attached ? Ground??

Tell you what, if you take the time to work through my Troubleshooting Procedure linked below it can help diagnose the cause of non charging, give it a shot

Heck you could be missing a lot.

Do you know for a fact that it's wired correctly?

How did this friend determine the generator is "good?"

Good ground? Good cutout? Good wiring? Good battery?

i took the generator to the Case IH Dealer & they tested it. It was the shop manager (60 plus yrs. old) that gave me the info.

I would trust him and his machine a lot more than a friend that said you don't need to polarize your gen.

When they worked on it they may have it Polarized at Pos or Neg (more likely) ground, so when you hook it up to your tractor it needs to be the correct polrity, so to be safe Polarize it again BEFORE start up and then run my Troubleshooting proceedure below

Same thing if you have a + ground tractor that you want to switch over to - ground?
