Carb for a BN

I bought a '47 BN at an estate sale this past weekend. The carburetor is in pretty poor shape both on the outside and internally. It looks like a Zenith carb, but there is so much rust and buildup that I cannot tell what the number is.

In looking at some of the previous posts and the parts site on this webpage, I was wondering if it matters what type of carb I put back on the tractor, as long as it is meant for that tractor model? Are there any restrictions or issues with putting a different type of Zenith on, or even a Marvel? There are several options for Zenith and Marvel carbs that are supposed to work for a BN, so I thought I would check before I purchased.

You might be surprised at what you can do with that Zenith.

I bought a "parts" Zenith off eBay for a few bucks. It looked like it was buried out back for years, wow was it a mess.

Pulled it a part, used heat to make sure all the brass pieces came out OK, soaked the heck out of it in carb cleaner and once I had all the gunk taken care off I soaked it in Evapo Rust and then chased all the circuits with drill bits (by hand).

Soaked it in carb cleaner again then blew it out with compressed air.

It sounds like a lot of work but really it's just a 20 minutes a shot for a few nights.

I have a BN with a Marvel as well, they both work well.

The catalog I get the info from does not say who makes them other then the 2 different ones that are M/S so had to sort of guess as to the 5 out of the 7 so only trying to give as best info as I can

Choke linkage does vary. Originals had a lever on the outside to enguage with other side hooked to a choke rod the operator could use by pulling. The distillate models did have a adjustable jet with t-shaped handle at the front side. Gas models didnt have that. New Zeniths dont have the manual lever on the outside and some have the otherside lever that you would push the rod instead of pulling. Can you read the round brass ID on top of yours?

I'm pretty sure IH only used two differnt Zenith carbs on the A/B/BN line, the 9752 and 10514A.

Now there's were variations (eg adjustable main for distillation) like Gene mentioned but the basic carb body and jets/vents are the same.

I'm not as sure on the Marvels. I know when I bought a kit for mine there where a bunch of numbers to choose from.

Unfortunately I can't read the numbers on the brass id. I've tried to clean it off with a few different cleaners with no luck. That is mostly why I decided to ask the experts on here about different carbs.

Some times a careful wire brushing is all it takes to be able to read that brass tag. BTDT and did a carb just last week on a 9N ford that you could not read the tag till I used a wire brush on it

Just another catalog error lots of them around nowdays like starters all fit A,B,c and SC Same way with gens and regs they are all not the same.
