Super A hydraulic pump leak

How does oil from the hydraulic reservoir get into the oil pan of the engine on a Super A Farmall? I am assuming through the hydraulic pump but would like some advice on what to do to fix it. I keep draining oil out of the pan and putting it in the rydraulic reservoir but it seems like it is getting worse as a quart doesn"t last long in the lift.

The pump shaft is driven by the timing dears in the front cover. This shaft has either a conventional lip seal, or an Oring. The shaft is usually grooved some from wear and the seal/Oring weak and worn. A speedy sleeve can be used on the conventional seal. (repair sleeve is a very thin covering that is put on the shaft to refresh the surface making a good smooth surface on which the new seal rides. The Oring version needs to have the seal hole in the housing enlarged and re grooved to fit a new Oring. Or bored out for a conventional seal. and speedy sleeve. Jim

Seal in the pump has failed, need to rebuild the pump with a new seal, just did that on my 100. I ended up getting the parts from Hoober, in PA. Not too bad a job, but will lead to cleaning the screen in the touch control unit and , new gaskets on the supply and return pipes. Just make sure everything is squeaky clean, and pay attention when the pump comes apart so you can put the pieces back the right way. My shaft was worn pretty good, but the new seal seated on a good part of the shaft. Good luck.

other than those mentioned already, you could have a leak through a crack in the casting. this is rare, but a possibility. it may not look like anything more than a pencil mark.

One more thing, quit dumping used motor oil back into the hydraulic system. Once oil has been in the engine, it has contaminants that include water, acids and probably small metal particles. None of those things is good for the high precision of the hydraulic components. After you have the leak fixed, flush it at least twice with hydraulic oil.

Jim,
Do you have a diagram showing where these seals and/or orings are located so I know what to look for once I take the pump off the tractor?
