farmall 350 1 wire alternator

I put a one wire alternator on my 350. I ran the wire from the alternator to the amp gauge and then to the battery side of the solenoid. It still doesn"t show any charge. It also doesn"t show discharge when I push the start button. The gauge does work. I run the tractor up wide open to try to get it to start charging. I have tried running a ground from the alternator housing to the battery to make sure it is grounded.

Is your "1 wire" alternator a Delco 10 SI type ?

If so, it may need a field flash to initially get it charging.
With the engine running at 1/2 throttle, use a jumper wire to connect the BAT stud on the alternator rear, to the regulator blade marked #1 on the rear edge of the alternator case.
Normally you only need to do this with a new installation or a machine that has not been started for a long time.

Make sure the fan belt is not loose and slipping.
Many a Farmall no charge situation has been caused by a slipping fan belt.

Forgot to add. The jumper wire need only be connected for a moment, it is not a permenant wiring change, as a perment Bat to #1 terminal wire will keep the alternator field circuit energized all the time and will discharge the battery.

Your wiring seems correct. If the system seems to be working try putting a screw driver near the rear bearing on the alt. if it is magnetized and tries to stick there, you have field in the alt. The tried and true 3 wire system is way easy and car reliable. Ask more if you want, We listen. Jim

Did you connect all the wires to the same post on the ammeter?

The electricity has to go THROUGH the ammeter in order for it to register any charge/discharge.

The alternator, ignition switch, and light switch should all be connected to one post.

The battery should be connected to the other post, all by itself.

If the ammeter then reads backwards, switch posts.
