12/4X38 Tires

I can get a pretty good deal on some tires for my S/M Farmall but they are 4 ply will these be good enough or should they be a heavier ply. Thanks

Depending on how you use the tractor, 4 ply should be just fine. If the tractor is being used for heavy work, or has a loader on it, then you should probably consider going to 6 ply. BUT! 12.4x38 is too SMALL for that tractor. An M/SM should have 13.6x38.

Measure the width of the rims. An 11 inch wide rim needs a 13.6.

If the rims measure just 10 inches wide, then a 12.4 will work, but that M should have minimum 11 inch wide rims.

generally the tire is one inch wider than the rim.

the 15.5-38s all say on 14" rims.
 
I would put 12.4s on if I could get them cheap. They would be more than acceptable on an M according to many on this site so how can they not be acceptable on a SM? It is the same exact tractor on the outside.
 
Dad had those tires on his M for years, like more than 20 years. We wore them out and hed repalce them with the same tire. They did squat some when he put the 3pt on it, but by that time it didnt do anything more than gaden work, so it wasnt a big deal. Only time I recall a problem was when Dad plowed up a garden for this guy we knew and he hit a chunck of metal and tore the sidewall.

Get a ruler, and someone to help, and measure the width of the rim. That is the only way you will know for sure.
