806 governor not opening

My 806 governor isn't opening up like it should under load. The engine starts and runs pretty well, but when the load hits, the engine just pulls down and the pump doesn't open up like it should.

Appreciate the help, as always,

Bob

Thanks Allan. The air filter been cleaned and the fuel filters are new.

I don't how this thing is set up. Are there governor flyweights that pull the pump open as the load takes rpms down?

How is your fuel pressure. The RD pumps have a fuel pressure gauge and if it is not up in 80psi or above it may get doggy. Common problem is broken spring in pressure regulator valve. After that, the governor on those is quite complex with having to move the fuel control sleeve on that rotating shaft. That was the big failure in those pumps, sleeve scoring and siezing on shaft.

Thanks for the responses.

Pete: Pressure is low - about 45 to 60. Where is that spring in the regulator? Is that something I could or should check myself or is that a pump shop job?

The plug for regulator is located right on top of the transfer pump. The end of pump the two lines run in and out. It has shims under it but if it is that low the spring is probably fatigued or broken. Fact is I have an old RD pump laying out in the shed on the farm place with the spring robbed out of it for that very reason, about 30 years ago. Of course it is a gear pump so may be plum worn out but worth a try on the spring.

I'll give that a shot. I don't have a OEM replacement for it, but if I fiddle with a shelf spring and get it up to 80 psi that's all there is to it isn't it?
