The original subject was "3pt stabilizers on 454 and similar tractors".

I stumbled on this post and am also concerned about the 3PT geometry on my 454. I mostly use a finish mower and have the factory underaxle mounts. I bought chains a couple of years ago to keep the mower straight when on an incline. When I raised the mower, I snapped one of the axle mounting bolts. I now use a single adjustable threaded bar on one side but have to keep some unwanted swaying. I noticed that the mower will swing to one side and back to center when raising the 3PH. The lower arms appear to be factory and have IH stamps.

Funny you should mention this, as just yesterday I was fiddling with the hitch geometry on the 454 I wrote about last year.

The non-stock setup that came with the machine didn't quite line up right and last summer I ended up using only one stabilizer; it came back from one mowing run with an amazing curve in it since (as you noticed) with only one stabilizer the arms are perfectly happy to swing side to side.

This week I re-fabricated the previous owner's home-made stabilizer mounts to put the pins closer to the right place and everything now seems to line up okay with two stabilizers.

Whenever I really feel like ruining a day I will lie under the axle and use my nifty cobalt left-hand bits to drill out the couple of busted bolts that used to hold the factory-original stabilizer mounts so I can put new correct ones on. I really wonder just what the previous owner was doing that managed to break off both mounts...

I am currently using one of the universal threaded eyelet types found at most farm stores but still have the chains. It would be so nice to be able to reasonably tighten up the swaying without breaking something when the implement is lifted.

It interesting to watch the mower lift up and to one side then return to center at full lift.
