300U PTO issues

Getting the 300U out, going to use it as backup when we do hay later this month. I have not gotten around to making the adjustment in the rear to get the PTO to stop spinning constantly because it has been in storage and we have been working a lot. When I pulled it out I wanted to test the 3 pt arms I bought on ebay using the post hole digger. AND while the digger was on the tractor I thought I would see how well the 300U handled it, range of motion etc. What I found was that the IPTO stopped pretty quickly after the auger engaged the ground. Raise the auger and it spins again. Lower it and it stops. Not really all that familiar with the back half of these tractors yet. Can someone tell me what might be going on here? I need a strong IPTO on this tractor for mowing, post holes, etc. Never had this happen in the past on other tractors. The 300U is new to me and is a 1955. It had good RPM's when the PTO stopped and the engine did not falter or strain (soft soil). Thanks!

The I-T manual has about 5 paragraphs of info on how to adjust that PTO clutch. BTDT and pretty hard to explain it here because of how much there is to doing it. Page 69 paragraph 208 explains how to adjust it in the IH-10 manual I have it sitting right here on my lap as I type this

Yes, actually I have that in my saved archives for this tractor. I appreciate the link, however. My question, and I'll go ahead and throw this at Rich also, is this: Is the adjustment needed for the continuous spinning going to be the same that is needed for the lack of power on the IPTO? Or is there another reason that I have no power? I think I was clear that I know why it spins all the time. That is not the issue. I am concerned about it NOT spinning under load. If it is the same adjustment then I am good to go. Just looking for some clarity on it because I am not the sharpest on transmission and PTO issues. Hope this clarifies the question.

If it makes no bad noises when it stops. Try the band adjustment first. One band needs to hold for shaft power and the other for stopping the shaft.
If that doesn't help the bands may be worn and need replaced.

The system is setup to brake the shaft when latched in the forward/down position, and apply full power when latched in the up position. Be sure there is no loose or lost motion in the linkage. The lever pivot on the axle is a frequent wear spot. If the band adjuster nuts are almost off the adjuster screws, and no joy, the bands will need to be relined. (I recommend a crane or construction equipment shop for the band replacement. Jim
