350 Ute power steering leak

I have a hydraulic oil leak at the bottom of the power steering housing, I believe a freeze plug is leaking/rusted. Has anyone experienced this same leak & if so is there an easier fix than pulling the entire steering assembly out? Has anyone ever used JB Weld or other patch, or replaced freeze plug in place?

Thanks, Mick

It is a Welch plug used to get the core sand out of the casting. (called a freeze plug but not!)
Draining the unit, then getting the old one out is harder than getting a new one in if replaced. If it were clean and wire brushed, JB weld or putty type fuel resistant Epoxy will work.

It is a very tight place to work. easiest to fix correctly if removed, but (very but) getting it removed is hours of work. putting it back is hours of work. If you drain it down and get it very dry, a new plug of the correct size, and a dab of the Epoxy, then using wooden shim shingles to wedge the new plug in on top of the old might be a fine quick fix. ( I would try it) Jim
