Cub will not run after starting

I have just replaced the carberator on my Cub with a new one but am getting the same negative results. If I disconnect the throttle rod from the governor linkage and try to start the engine and it runs then the problem is in the governor or its linkage. I must be missing something here. Would appreciate comments Gentlemen, Thanks.

I wouldn't disconnect the linkage from the governor. You can over rev the engine before you know it and can stop it.

Adjust the linkage according to the manual and try again. Page 32, para 127 in following link:

After you have adjusted the linkage, as you try to start the engine, if it doesn't fire up, spray a shot of ether straight into the intake of the carb. If it fires then, you are not getting fuel. If it still doesn't fire, check for spark.

Does the governor arm move freely? They can seize up if the tractor has been sitting a long time, especially outdoors.

If the governor is pulling the throttle shut, you need to adjust the idle stop screw so it can't.

BTW, buying a new carburetor is a waste of money, unless your existing carburetor is missing, damaged beyond repair, or the wrong one. There is nothing to "go bad" or "wear out" that doesn't come in a carb kit and can't be replaced.

Problem with buying a carb and having it shipped to you is the UPS people drop it, throw it, kick it, shake it, smash it. By the time it gets to you 9 times out of 10 it needs to be pulled apart and rebuilt anyway. Save yourself some money and rebuild the one you have next time.

You said it will start but not run. Do you mena it dies, or that it will not rev up? If no rev is the problem try moving the rod doing to the carb. from the front bracket by hand. If it revs then Check that the spring mounted on the governor lever (hard to see) is not broken,
